Cape Town is a great place to grab a bite to eat, as there are an abundance of fabulous restaurants an coffee shops all within walking distance of each other. Ever since First Thursday’s came to Cape Town, I have taken an interest in Bree Street, a street I often used to overlook when I was younger. One of the amazing gems to be found in Bree Street include Smak Deli, a delacatessian and restaurant focusing on deliciously prepared breakfasts and lunches.
I was recently invited to eat lunch by Katia Scherf, one of Smak Deli’s talented chefs. She is extremely passionate about food (and cooking) and this is evident in the quality of the dishes brought out from the kitchen.
A focus on lunch- Smak Deli
Smak Deli is located on the corner of Prestwich and Bree, giving you a nice street-side city view from within the restaurant. They feature both inside and outside seating areas, with my personal favourite being at the bar area, as it allowed for optimal people watching. Upon entering the venue, you will notice a somewhat homely feeling to the place, as an assortment of products for purchase are scattered around the shop, as well the main deli section and cafe bar to the right hand side.
After being seated by an extremely friendly waiter, we were given time to browse the menu and order drinks. The drinks order was easy – two red cappuccinos, and sparkling water. Choosing our lunch meal however was a challenge. When visiting Smak Deli, expect to be blown away with the amount of variety on their menu. Tacos, steak and chips, burgers, risottos, flapjacks and souffle egg white omelettes are just a taste of what you can order. It took my friend and I a good 10-15 minutes to decide on our order, before settling for the flash fried tuna sashimi salad and the lamb double zero (pasta).
While we waited we sipped on our cappuccinos, I also couldn’t help but to peek at what everyone else had ordered. Just by looking around it seemed that burgers were a popular choice to order. The burgers somewhat made me regret my decision to go green and order a salad. However, by the time my food had arrived, I was glad I made the choice to order the salad! The tuna was seared perfectly- just enough to seal the outside but not enough to overcook the inside and a generous portion of both tuna and greens were presented. My friend, who ordered the pasta, was also extremely satisfied with her dish.
All in all Smak Deli is a wonderful stop for a light meal or coffee when in Cape Town’s CBD. Over and above the fantastic service and great location, Smak Deli offers an extremely well priced menu, with real value for money meal options.
